EAS Diversity Committee Statement

The Division of Engineering and Applied Sciences (EAS) at Caltech understands that historically and presently people of color and underrepresented minorities are met with overt and nuanced forces of resistance across numerous systems, including education, and within the fields of science and engineering. As a small academic and research institute, Caltech is a paradigm of the whole being greater than the sum of its individual parts. Yet we are critically aware that there is significant room for growth in terms of fostering an inclusive and equitable environment where diversity can thrive.

Caltech undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, faculty, and staff share a common passion: striving for excellence in the pursuit of knowledge. To this point, EAS recognizes that high-caliber investigation is reaches its fullest potential when brilliant minds from diverse backgrounds are included.

Encouragement fosters growth. EAS has the ability and responsibility to affect positive change by engaging in a more holistic approach towards the advancement of science and human knowledge. A truly diverse, inclusive and equitable environment requires both internal support for individual stakeholders, as well as active engagement with the larger scientific community.

We look to our community for input to guide our strategy as we endeavor to make diversity, equity and inclusion and integral element of our long-term scientific and academic goals.
